Gadgets are making life easier or lazier??

After all the hype n gaga over the blog inauguration and the first post...... here comes a slightly serious one....

My cell phone conked off over the weekend.... had to get used to the features of the flicked one from my bro. Developed the skills to get used to this bare basic mobile. But even after a day's possession, I still dont realize that my phone is ringing... ;-) It will take time......
After all the experiments I did on my cell like flashing the OS n stuff.... inspired from E398modders.com (Damn good site!), I knew that this was coming.... but didnt expect it to be so early and untimely....

This unexpected turn of event arose in me the question of how addicted to are we to our gadgetery?
Dictionary.com refers gadgets as "A small specialized mechanical or electronic device; a contrivance." Contrivance is a device that is very useful for a particular job.
Let me start of with listing all the so called gadgets we use - "Cell phone/PDA, PC/laptop, ipod/Mp3 player, TV, remote controls...etc" So have we really got addicted to these or can we live without these...... One needs to distinguish between necessity and addiction.
We started using things because we needed them. We found a utility in them..... But we have got so used to using these that now we cannot live without them. The necessities have slowly transformed into addictions. To talk to my colleague on the other end of my room I use my phone.... Lazy enough to walk up to him. The attitude is like "when I have them why shouldn't I use it?" But then the real problem comes when I don't have them. Then I cannot get the job done because I am either too disinterested to do it without the gadget or I have forgotten/dont know how to do it.....
This I think is a lil sorry state of affairs to deal with.... I definitely feel that as the technology keeps growing to make our life easier, we are getting lazier adopting this technology........

Hi Praveen,

It’s a very remarkable posting you have put here. I would like to comment on it as I have a very different outlook than what you have expressed.

Man started inventing gadgets for his ease. It’s considered from the day one that TIME is more expensive in ones life. Most of the gadgets/technology we have in front of us hoards our time.
For example to talk to our colleague on the other end of room we call him and finish the matter in a minute or so. Where as without technology/gadgets with us we had to get ourselves disturbed from the work we are doing, walk to him all the way, finish the matter we wanted to talk and then come back.
We can observe lot of other activities which are involved which consumes time other than the actual work.

If we go on observing the technology/gadgets we have in front of us, all of them express the same advantage. Off course every other thing has its own advantages and disadvantages. But here for technologies we can find more advantages than the disadvantage. They are making our life simpler and easier for you so that at the end of the day you are left with more precious time which we could not have gained with out technologies. If we are not using the gained time for useful things then we can term it as lazy which will be our fault.

So I would like to call technology/gadgets as necessities rather than addictions. Still if we call it as addiction we are in profit with it. So there is no issue with getting addicted to it.

Thanks
Dharshan
